Saturday 22/09/2012 | WWE.com : WWE Joins Forces With Nothing But Net

WRESTLING, 06 OCTOMBRIE 2012
NEW YORK — WWE and the Divas have announced their partnership with Nothing But Nets at the Social Good Summit! On Saturday, Executive Vice President of Creative Stephanie McMahon and former Divas Champions Layla and Alicia Fox spoke about the new alliance with the United Nations Foundation’s global, grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa.
“We have an incredibly powerful voice, with over 115 million social media followers, and we want to use that voice to give back to the community,” McMahon said. (WATCH HER TOUT)
The announcement was made by McMahon at the Social Good Summit and via Twitter by Layla (@MsLayEL) and Alicia (@AliciaFoxy) during the “Wrestling Malaria: Uniting Fans Online & Offline for Social Good” Q&A, which was held at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan. The Q&A, which was streamed live online in over 200 countries and translated into six languages, was moderated by Elizabeth Gore, Vice President of Global Partnerships for the United Nations Foundation.
“We are very excited to join WWE in this special partnership,” said Gore, who added that they hope to eliminate malaria in Africa by 2015.
WWE plans to promote its new partnership with Nothing But Nets through its programing and social media channels. Also, the Divas will visit Africa in the upcoming year to distribute bed nets and draw more attention to this issue. Nothing But Nets has distributed more than 6.5 million bed nets to Africa, but still, every 60 seconds a child younger than 5 dies from Malaria, and women are also greatly affected by the disease. The UN Foundation created the Nothing But Nets campaign in 2006 to allow anyone to join the fight against malaria by donating $10 to send a net to save a life from malaria.

“We have the best fans in the world. I know the WWE Universe will do their part and donate $10,” Layla predicted. “I’m proud to once in my life say that I’m a buzzkill!”
“We are thrilled to join forces with WWE to spread the buzz about Nothing But Nets and the fight against malaria to their millions of fans,” said Chris Helfrich, Director of the Nothing But Nets campaign. “Malaria is a serious global health problem that affects millions of families worldwide, mostly in Africa. Bed nets are a simple, cost-effective tool to shield people from deadly mosquito bites. An alliance with a fun, dynamic organization like WWE and the fabulous WWE Divas will help more Americans than ever send nets and save lives!”
The Social Good Summit is a three-day conference where big ideas meet new media to create innovative solutions. Held during UN Week from Sept. 22 to 24, the Social Good Summit unites a dynamic community of global leaders to discuss a big idea :  the power of innovative thinking and technology to solve our greatest challenges. The most innovative technologists, influential minds and passionate activists have come together with one shared goal: to unlock the potential of new media and technology to make the world a better place, and then to translate that potential into action. Other participants at the Social Good Summit include Al Gore, Forest Whitaker, Deepak Chopra and Mashable founder Pete Cashmore. Inspired by sports columnist Rick Reilly, hundreds of thousands of people have joined the Nothing But Nets campaign that was created by the UN Foundation in 2006. It only costs $10 to provide an insecticide-treated bed net that can prevent this deadly disease. To date, the campaign has raised $45 million and saved thousands of lives.
